Owego Native Killed In Her Pennsylvania Home

Authorities say a woman who grew up in Tioga County was killed in her home in Pennsylvania. Two people, including a teenage boy, have been charged in her death.

According to police in Lancaster, 32-year-old Nicole Mathewson did not show up for her job as an elementary school teacher on Monday morning.

Investigators say a friend found Mathewson's body in her residence around 9:10 a.m. Monday.

Police say a 16-year-old boy has been charged with criminal homicide in the woman's death. A 25-year-old man later was arrested as a suspected accomplice.

Mathewson graduated from Owego Free Academy in 2000. She was a sixth-grade teacher in Lancaster.

Police say 16-year-old Marcus Rutter was taken into custody Monday night, about 12 hours after authorities were called to Mathewson's home.

In addition to the homicide count, Rutter has been charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy and robbery.

A man viewed by police as an accomplice was arrested Tuesday night. Investigators say 25-year-old Thomas Moore of Lancaster has been charged with homicide and burglary. He faces other charges, including criminal conspiracy, robbery and receiving stolen property.

Lancaster County district attorney Craig Stedman described the killing of Mathewson as a "senseless, ghastly crime." Without describing what happened, Stedman said: "It's appalling."

Police have not disclosed what may have been taken from Mathewson's home. Her car, which had been reported missing, was recovered in Lancaster.
