Anyone who has kids has made parenting mistakes, but the next time you hit that point where ripping your hair out seems like the most sane option, keep these tips in mind:

  • Don't blame the kid for your reaction – It might feel good to blame your kid for "making you yell at them," but you're the adult and the choice to lose your cool is up to you.
  • Don't shield them from exploring – Skinned knees and bruises can put a damper on fun, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't let your kid explore the backyard to take a few spills every now and then. Shielding your kid from every possible danger in the world doesn't keep them safe- it'll only keep them scared.
  • Don't make crazy threats – Unless something is seriously wrong with you, you're  not really going to leave your kid at the store if he doesn't stop whining so don't make that threat. Instead, make sure the threat is realistic and appropriate and then follow through!
