They say a diamond is forever, but maybe not so much. Especially if that diamond is an expensive one. A study out of Emory University has found cheap engagement rings lead to longer marriages.

Economics professors surveyed 3,000 adults who had been married and discovered that the higher the cost of the diamond engagement ring, the shorter the marriage lasted. Guys who spent between $2000 and $4000 on a ring were 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than guys who spent between $500 and $2,000. But those who spent less than $500 also had a high rate of divorce.

By the way, the more expensive your wedding is, the more likely you are to get divorced. Couples who spend $20,000 or more on getting married are three-times more likely to get divorced. Researchers think the correlation between expensive rings and weddings and divorce may have something to do with the financial stress it puts on a couple.
