The 139th Preakness Stakes and The Black-Eyed Susan
The 139th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is this Saturday. You can watch it on NBC 5 beginning at 4:30 with the race starting around 6:35. The Kentucky Derby winner is the favorite for this race too.
California Chrome is going from the 3rd post and is a 3-5 favorite. California Chrome has won his last five races by a combined 26 lengths,. He also was the first California-bred horse to capture the Derby in 52 years.
Social Inclusion is the 2nd choice to win. He’ll go from the 8 post and is at 5-1. Social Inclusion is one of seven entries that did not compete in the Kentucky Derby. Bayern (5 Post) and Ride On Curlin (10 Post) are 3rd at 10-1.
With so much time before the race, you’ll need something to quench your thirst till post time. The Kentucky Derby the drink of choice is the Mint Julep. For the Preakness Stakes, it’s The Black-Eyed Susan. I’ve found 2 different recipes.
According to the official Preakness website. It’s 2 Part Bourbon, 1 Part Vodka Cirtus, 3 Part Sweet & Sour mix and 1 Part Orange Juice. Fill a highball glass with shaved ice add ingredients. Garnish with Orange and Maraschino cherry.
Here’s the other: 1 part Cointreau, 1 part Mount Gay rum, 1part Vodka, Pineapple Juice and Orange Juice. Fill a highball glass with shaved ice, add the liquors first, then top off with equal parts of orange and pineapple juice. Stir and garnish with a lime wedge.
Good luck and drink up. I’m hoping CC wins the race so that we have a chance for a Triple Crown winner in a couple of weeks at the Belmont Stakes.
