Before you know it, warmer weather will be here and you’ll be hitching up your boat and visiting local waterways. But, before you do, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve taken a state required boater’s safety course.

As of May 1, 2014, anyone born on or after May 1, 1996 is required to complete an approved course in boater education if they want to operate a motorboat in New York State. People under the age of 10 years-old are not allowed to take this course.

If you want to get a jump on completing the safety course, one will be offered at ANC Heating at 122 Jennings Street in Endicott this evening. There will be two sessions, and you must attend both. The instructor charges a fee for this course. If you are 18 or older in addition to the class fee, you’ll be required to pay New York State Parks a $10.00 fee for your boating safety certificate. To attend the course at ANC Heating this evening, please call James Macuch at 607-341-5765.

At the safety course, you’ll be taught: strategic planning, docking basics, navigating, smooth anchoring and boat operation.
