New York State Police Major James Barnes in Binghamton on June 28, 2016. [Bob Joseph/WNBF News][/caption]New York State Police Major James Barnes - the commander of Sidney-based Troop C - says the agency is making preparations to observe its 100th birthday in 2017.

Barnes, who has been with the state police since 1992, has been commander of the seven-county troop for six months. He was interviewed on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program on Tuesday.

Barnes discussed some of the new challenges facing the state police and how the agency is working to meet those challenges.
