A man sustained a head injury in an attack at a downtown Binghamton apartment house hours after the building had been damaged by a fire.

The assault at 129 Susquehanna Street was reported around 3:20 p.m. Thursday. About a dozen people had to flee the building around 5:30 a.m. when a blaze broke out in the upper section of the three-story structure. Five people had been arrested in a drug raid Tuesday morning at the building and at a neighboring house.

Initial reports regarding the assault indicated a man may have been stabbed in the head. Witnesses reported hearing two men yelling shortly before the attack. They said it was possible the man was struck with a pipe.

The witnesses said the injured man was bleeding profusely before he was loaded into a Binghamton fire department ambulance and transported to a hospital.

The attacker apparently fled on foot before police arrived.
