It looks like a nice weather weekend in the Southern Tier.  The local race tracks are back in action.

It's the 20th running of the Southern Tier Open  on Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood.  The 40 lap Modified open event will pay a minimum of $2,500 to win.  The season will also officially get underway with full point races in the Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA Modified and Lightning Cat divisions.  Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. this Saturday.  Kids 12 and younger are free.

Pat Ward will try and repeat his 2012 effort by winning the Modified Southern Tier Open.  Ward, is a two time winner of the event and is joined by Mike Colsten and Mitch Gibbs as the only two time winners of this event.  Colsten, recorded two wins at the speedway last season and is one of the local favorites entering Saturday’s 20th edition of the race.

Pit gates will open at 3 with grandstand gates swinging open at 4.  Practice begins at 5:05 with racing set for 6:00.  Kids 12 years old and younger will be admitted in to the grandstand area free of charge.
