Sigourney Weaver Says ‘Avatar’ Sequel Scripts Are ‘Amazing’ in Scope

Sigourney Weaver is something of a sci-fi movie icon. Since her performance in Alien, she’s made a ton of appearances in all kinds of movies about the weird and the wonderful, from The Cabin in the Woods to WALL-E to a brief but not unwelcome scene in this summer’s Ghostbusters. She was also one of the best parts of James Cameron’s Avatar, playing Dr. Grace Augustine, one of the scientists in the Avatar Program who started a research program to learn more about the planet Pandora and its inhabitants. She’s read the scripts for Cameron’s planned sequels, and, according to her, they’re “amazing.”

Speaking with Variety about A Monster Calls and The Defenders, she also mentioned her excitement at the prospect of more Avatars, and praised Cameron’s scripts.

In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope. He did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play.

The world that Avatar created is one of the most scrupulously detailed planets every conceived in sci-fi history. Cameron’s team even went to far as to give every new alien plant and animal a Latin name, and a wealth of information and research didn’t even make it into the movie. The Avatar sequels could take many paths, continuing to watch Jake Sully (or Jakesully) as he learns about being a Na’vi chieftain, or following other tribes of blue people that we saw only briefly in the first movie, or even taking the aliens into space. The possibilities are endless, and Cameron is bound only by financial concerns. And, let’s be honest, he did build a deep-sea submarine to take down into the Marianas Trench just cuz, so he’s probably not too concerned about that.

Avatar 2 could maybe probably possibly open in theaters December 21, 2018.
