Several residents of a Town of Dickinson neighborhood were evacuated early Thursday (March 3) after a shooting incident.

Binghamton police initially responded to a report of shots fired on Glenwood Avenue near the city line at 12:24 a.m.

State Police Captain Scott Heggelke said someone opened fire on a car that was heading south on Glenwood Road. Although at least one shot hit the car, its occupants were not hurt.

Heggelke said police believed five or six shots were fired in the incident.

The car that was targeted struck several parked vehicles before becoming disabled in the middle of the roadway. The man who had been driving that car had left by the time police arrived.

Police believed someone involved in the incident may have entered a home in the area of the shooting. Nearby residents were advised to evacuate via phone calls from a reverse 911 system.

The State Police Special Operations Response Team was called to clear the building in question. About eight people were being interviewed by investigators in connection with the incident.

Streets near the shooting scene were closed for several hours while investigators collected evidence.

Investigators say people with information about the incident may contact the state police at Kirkwood by calling 607.775.1241.
