It's been a long time since we've had a summer as hot with so little rainfall than the summer of 2016.  And it's far from over. The real dog days of summer are coming with the arrival of August.

According to Ben Schott, Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service in Johnson City,  with conditions at the Binghamton Airport, "we have been below normal for precipitation every month but February for 2016, and since March, 5.76 inches below normal. The Finger Lakes region and further into Western New York have been more impacted but the Twin Tiers are definitely seeing its share of lack of rainfall."

I know farms and gardens in the the Southern Tier are sadly drying up because of the lack of water. We are not quite at the critical state, but pretty close and the dog days of summer are just beginning.  But what about your cat?

My neighbor lost most of her flowers but her cat nip is thriving.  Cat nip AKA nepeta cataria, is a natural herb actually found in the mint family.  Commonly found in the Binghamton area -- zone 5, this perennial needs little water to survive, especially once established.

If you've ever given cat nip to your cat, chances are they love it.  Not all cats, but most get pretty goofy with the herb. They smell it, chew on it, they roll around in it, and just plain go crazy for about 15 minutes.

What makes catnip so irresistible?  Watch for yourself;  I promise your eyes won't glaze over too much!
