After pleading guilty to robbing Scotty McCreery and his friends in 2014, Mikkail Jamal Shaw has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

The 21-year-old received his sentence on Tuesday morning (June 28) in Wake County court; additionally, WARL reports, Shaw will be required to participate in mental health counseling and vocational training while he is in prison.

The robbery occurred back in May of 2014, at around 2AM, in an apartment near the North Carolina State University campus. The American Idol winner and his friends had brought home food and were watching a movie when they heard a knock at the door; thinking it was a neighbor, one of McCreery’s friends opened the door, and the robbers barged in. One held an assault rifle to one of McCreery’s friend’s chests, and another put a pistol to McCreery’s head, before making off with, per arrest warrents, wallets, about $800 in cash, cell phones and a laptop.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and Shaw was arrested just two days after the robbery, after turning himself in to police. On Monday (June 27), Shaw pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree kidnapping, three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of burglary and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery; two other suspects are still at large, but Shaw refused to identify or give any additional information about them.

McCreery and the other victims were present at Shaw's sentencing. The singer did not attend Shaw’s plea hearing, but he was on a potential list of witnesses; his mother Judy did appear at the hearing.
