Restaurant At Greater Binghamton Airport Closed

A restaurant that opened with some fanfare at the Greater Binghamton Airport just over a year ago has ceased operations.

When the Gateway Café opened, Broome County officials said the facility would operate under a restaurant and concessions deal that was scheduled to run through 2019.

Kurt Holden from FirstAir Group participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with County Executive Debra Preston in March 2015.

Holden said FirstAir Group had a "vested interest" at the airport, where the company is a fixed base operator.

An employee of FirstAir Group on Friday said the restaurant closed recently and Holden was no longer with the company. Holden could not be reached for comment.

Signs posted on the entrance to the airport restaurant indicate it is "closed for renovations." But the FirstAir Group employee said the Gateway Café wasn't going to reopen.

Under the long-term deal, the county was to receive four percent from restaurant and food sales at the restaurant. The county was to be paid eight percent of vending and gift shop sales.

Airport and county representatives could not be reached for comment Friday on the restaurant closure and whether efforts were underway to replace the business.

A Subway restaurant unit previously provided food service at the airport in the Town of Maine.
