Long-time local politician, Thomas Libous has lost his battle with prostate cancer.

The Senator was recently convicted of lying to the FBI about his involvement in getting his son a job with a downstate law firm and had been forced out of office as the second-highest ranking elected official in the New York State Senate.

Libous had been battling cancer for several years and had always vowed to fight the disease.

In his sentencing earlier this year, a federal court took into consideration his medical condition in placing the Republican under house arrest instead of calling for time in prison.

Details on funeral arraignments are expected in the next few days.

Libous was instrumental in securing funding for dozens of local agencies and programs in the area including ensuring the Binghamton Senators hockey team and Binghamton Mets would be located in the Parlor City, advocating for a casino for the Southern tier and working to make sure non-profits like the Crime Victims Assistance Center and youth programs would get state support.
