Emergency repair work is expected to start soon on a bone-jarring roadway leading into Binghamton.

People who drive south on Front Street from the Route 17 exit have been complaining about the conditions in the area of an ongoing renovation project. Some have said the "numerous dips" in the road have made it feel a bit like a roller coaster ride.

Mayor Richard David acknowledged the roadway is in "poor condition" and needs attention.

Speaking on WNBF's Binghamton Now program, the mayor said the city is in the process of bringing in a company to "excavate the portions that are damaged and replace them temporarily with stone and a thin layer of cold patch."

David said the city is seeking bids for the work and he believes repairs could begin next week.

Julianne Ludka, an owner of the Red Oak Diner on Front Street, expressed concern about the "terrible condition" the street was left in when crews completed work on the gateway project for the season.

Ludka said the situation was made worse because there are no signs to warn drivers "of the bumpy road ahead."

David said signs will be installed to alert motorists of the conditions.
