This weekend, it's the Volunteer Firefighters Open House. Fire Departments throughout the area will hold their annual open house events. They'll try to recruit new volunteers. It's called "RecruitNY."  I know one of the things that my Dad is most proud of, is being a volunteer firefighter.

It's designed to help increase volunteer membership which has suffered over the last few years due to various things including the stagnant economy. Fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide visitor activities and stations throughout the firehouse.

43 volunteer fire departments will be participating. Chenago Bridge, Endwell, West Endicott, Vestal, Five Mile Point, and Windsor are just some of the departments hosting an open house from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Many local Fire Departments are having a pancake breakfast and/or chicken BBQ as part of their Open House. Whether you're interested in becoming a volunteer, or just learning more about what a firefighter does, everyone is encouraged to attend one of the open houses.

For more info on what your local Fire Department is doing for RecruitNY, go here or contact your local fire department via a non-emergency phone number.
