It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to car seat safety.  The statistics are staggering.  Care crashes are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old.  Yet correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.

Part of the problem is 17 percent of car seats are used hand-me-downs or not installed correctly.  The Broome County Health Department is again partnering with the Broome County Sheriff's Office and will hold a car seat check event at the Karen Gorman Agency located at 2 Cushman Boulevard in Binghamton this Friday (August 19) from 1-3pm.

According to the press release, the event will include free child safety seat checks by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, as well as free educational materials and guidance on child safety seats.

The event is free and parents that do go, please plan to bring your child safety seat(s), along with your children and the vehicle you will want your child safety seat installed into, plus the vehicle car safety manual and the car seat manual.  Inspections will be done on a first-come, first serve basis, so it might be a good idea to get there early.
