Rapper Calls Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ Video ‘Offensive,’ ‘Harmful’

Taylor Swift released ‘Shake It Off,’ the first single from her upcoming album, this week, and at the same time, a fun video for the song. And despite an intentional departure from country music, Swift has received positive reviews … well, mostly.

Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ music video garnered more than four million views in less than 24 hours, but rapper Earl Sweatshirt isn’t one of them. In fact, the singer, who admits he hasn’t watched, says Swift is “perpetuating black stereotypes” in the visual, calling the video both “offensive” and “harmful”:

He wasn’t done there. “For instance, those of you who are afraid of black people but love that in 2014 it’s ok for you to be trill or twerk or say n—-,” Sweatshirt adds.

In her video, Swift portrays several characters. She dresses up like a cheerleader, ballerina, street dancer and more, but it’s the urban images that really got under the rapper’s skin. For one character, Swift dons big hoop earrings and has dancers that twerk all around her. The songstress has yet to respond to the rapper’s comments directly, but in an interview with ‘Good Morning America,’ she had this to say:

“I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more. And I think you have to follow, just this intuition, this gut feeling. As a songwriter, you just write to write a certain kind of music and you don’t know why.”

‘Shake It Off’ is about shaking off the haters … safe to assume she’ll do just that.
