After a series of health scares — including a major stroke in 2013 — Randy Travis appeared in front of fans again with on stage with Charlie Daniels at CMA Fest on June 9, 2016.

Daniels introduced Travis to the crowd at Nissan Stadium as “2016 Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee” before bringing the legend on stage to greet the audience, who gave him a standing ovation. According to the Tennessean, Travis is still regaining power of speech, but the artist grinned from ear to ear as Daniels helped him walk over and wave to the crowd. Daniels, who is also inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, gave Travis a hug before he left the stage. The two have a special relationship, according to Travis’ wife, Mary.

“He’s always been so fond of Charlie Daniels,” she says. “There has always just been this big-brother-little-brother feel between the two of them.”

Travis has been making appearances here and there with other artists lately, including Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney, gradually edging back into the spotlight. He’s also appearing in a newly-released film (available on Netflix June 15) called The Price, playing a dying country legend. His wife, Mary, said this spring that the artist has been making small steps on the road to recovery after the stroke, from which he nearly died.

“It’s the little things — the extra word, the extra sound, the extra lap we make in rehab. It certainly puts life in perspective as far as what we need to focus on,” she explained.
