Pennsylvania police are warning residents of a fake email floating around that claims to be a fine for traffic violations from PennDOT.

The fake email has been sent to residents across the state and claims a vehicle registered to the recipient was captured running a red light, and it provides links to supposedly view photos and pay the fine. The links redirect the recipient to websites that are not affiliated with PennDOT.

Police say the email is a “phishing” scam which is an attempt to get personal information by posing as a legitimate business or organization.

In case you weren’t aware, traffic tickets issued in Pennsylvania are not paid directly to PennDOT. And if you happen to find the email in your inbox, you’ll notice poor spelling and grammatical errors which are another sign of a scam.

Police say if you receive this phishing email, do not reply or click on the links, but rather delete it right away.
