Part of the roadway near the Workers Arch at the Binghamton city line has proved to be an ongoing annoyance for westbound motorists.

A state Department of Transportation paving crew Tuesday put down a layer of asphalt to provide a smoother driving surface.

Crews previously had done some spot patching on the stretch of Main Street but shallow potholes would reemerge after a short time.

The new paving addresses the immediate roadway issues, although additional work along the Route 17C corridor is planned for next year.

According to DOT spokesman David Hamburg, a two-mile section of Main Street from Westover to the Binghamton city line is to be resurfaced in the next construction season.
