When you woke up this morning, did you realize it was National Cat Day?  According to Netscape Home & Living, there are 88.3 million cats in the United States, compared to 74.8 million dogs.  Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, James Franco and Martha Stewart all have cats.  I have 6 rescue cats in my house and 2 are pictured here.  After more than a decade of celebrating National Cat Day, cats are more popular than ever.

With Thursday October 29th being National Cat Day, a number of pet store retailers like CatClaws.com and Petco that are offering a discount on cat supplies.  But there are a number of purrfect ways (you knew that was coming!) that you can celebrate today and here are a few that comes to mind.

1)   Adopt -  It was the hope of National Cat Day organizers more than a decade ago, that people would consider adopting a cat from a local shelter.  In the Greater Binghamton area, there are some wonderful kitties hoping to get adopted.  Click on these links for some wonderful local shelters:  Happy Tails No-Kill Animal Shelter, Project Paw, Animal Care Council, True Friends Animal Welfare Center and The Humane Society.  There are many more in our area.  Please support your favorite shelter.

2)  Donate to a Shelter - All the shelters listed above could use food, litter, blankets, towels, food bowls, cat toys and other supplies.

3)  Watch a Cat Video - YouTube is filled with hilarious cat and kitten videos.  I've even featured a few on 981TheHawk.com.  And it sounds like there are more to come as the Internet Cat Video Festival is on National Cat Day, held every year at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston.

4)  Quality Time - Most cats love to play so spend some time with your feline.  My cat's favorite toy is the Cat Dancer.

5)  Take a Nap - There's a lot you can learn from your cat!  Grab a blanket up, cuddle up on the couch and take a cat nap.
