If you are a New York resident and you have medical condition aggravated by heat, you will be able to apply beginning May 2nd to receive a free air conditioner from the state.
Low income families can apply for assistance to purchase air conditioners due to a three million dollar program offered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

To find out if you are eligible, you have to under the program’s sliding scale based on how many people live in your home, and have someone residing in your household with a medical condition that is worsened by extreme heat. For example, if you have 4 people living in your house, and your income is less than $4,316 a month you are eligible for the free A/C.

There were 230 households in the Southern Tier that received assistance last year.
