New York's minimum wage increases by 75 cents today, bringing it up to $8.75 an hour.

Today's raise is part of three annual changes that actually began last year. On December 31st of 2013, the state’s minimum wage was increased to $8.00 per hour. In 2015, it will be increased to $9.00.

But there's a catch- the minimum wage for food service workers will remain unchanged at $5 an hour for now. In February, a wage board created by Governor Cuomo will decide how much of a raise tipped workers will receive.
