The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is cautioning residents that increased encounters between people and coyotes are anticipated.

The DEC says Eastern Coyotes have expanded from rural areas into suburban and even urban neighborhoods.

The animals are territorial around their dens with pups being born.

Encounters could also be a problem in midsummer when coyotes forage for food for their young.

Some precautions can be taken to avoid contact like keeping pet food inside, securing garbage containers and keeping other food sources inaccessible.

The DEC also warns that coyotes have been known to prey on small dogs and cats.
