Ten new School Resource Officers are on the job in Broome County.

District Attorney Stephen Cornwell introduced the officers this week.

School Districts fund their own SROs, who work to build positive relationships with students to prevent serious issues in the future.

Each of the officers has over 20 years of experience in law enforcement and is retired from various local departments including the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Binghamton, Endicott and Vestal Police Departments.

The officers are trained through the New York Juvenile Officer and School Resource Officers Association and receive continued training throughout the year, including over summer vacations.

The SRO program was started in Windsor in 2016 with BOCES, Chenango Valley, Catholic Schools of Broome County, Harpursville, Whitney Point and Susquehanna Valley signing on earlier this year.

The new officers are Daniel Thomas, Windsor, Joseph Mariano and Thomas Williams, Broome-Tioga BOCES, Kevin Leska, Catholic Schools of Broome County, Scott Alston and Patrick Sine, Chenango Valley, Nicholas Zakrajsek, Harpursville, Gerald Mullins, Susquehanna Valley and Steven Noyes, Whitney Point.  School Resource Officer Marc Ayres will be a substitute SRO assigned to all school districts in addition to his duties in the District Attorney’s Office.
