My brother moved to a suburb of Washington D.C. in the mid 1970's.  Somewhere between then and now, the D.C. area has moved up to number one, most expensive place to live.  Somehow it ranks above New York, LA and Chicago.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a family in the D.C. area will spend $17,603 a year on housing, while a family in Cleveland, Ohio will spend $9,061 or 48 percent less. One reason the cost of housing is so high in D.C.-Maryland-Virginia is that about 1,000 people move to the area every month, which puts pressure on the supply and demand of housing and that just boosts the prices.

The top 10 most expensive places to live in the U.S.:

  1. Washington, DC
  2. San Francisco, California
  3. New York, New York
  4. San Diego, California
  5. Baltimore, Maryland
  6. Los Angeles, California
  7. Seattle, Washington
  8. Boston, Massachusetts
  9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  10. Chicago, Illinois
