The lanes are planned as part of the new traffic pattern which has been approved for a section of West State Street.

Work has started on a paving project for a half-mile of the street between Chenango and Eldredge streets.

Milling of the old pavement is underway. When the work is finished, pavement markings will be altered to designated one travel lane in each direction. A center turn lane will be added, along with dedicated bike lanes.

For years, West State Street near the Binghamton Plaza has had two lanes for each direction.

City officials say the traffic pattern changes should make the street safer for motorists and bicyclists.

The changes are being made following recommendations by the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study.

In addition to the work on West State Street, a nearby section of Chenango Street is to be milled and paved.
