Cindy Covey is an instructor at the Afton Central School. During the previous school year, she had been teaching her sixth grade class the art of letter writing as a class service project.

The students correspond with service men and women that are stationed overseas. She felt that this concept has made a lasting impression on her kids in many way.

It gives them a sense of patriotism that stays with them forever and it doesn't hurt that it also teaches them English and social skills.

Each year these 11 and 12 year olds  would "adopt" a service  personnel pen pal and write them several uplifting letters. They would correspond with them and would eventually send them a care package.

It seems to be rewarding experience for everyone involved both the student and the military man or woman. There is one problem this year.

The class had trouble with getting a contact for addresses of overseas service personnel. They have the letters written and ready to go but no one to send them too. They are still looking for your help.

Pen pals must have an APO or FPO address to correspond with. All names are kept confidential and addresses are not shared (to protect the pen pals).

So this is how you can help. Do you know a soldier who is currently stationed overseas? You can help by reaching out to family, friends, American Legions, VFWs or any other organization to see if they have a contact that the students can write to.

Please help by contacting Cindy Covey. She can be reached at ccovey@aftoncsd.org.
