For defending 5 Mile Point Speedway Modified Track Champion Mike Colsten the 2014 racing season has been more than challenging.  Early season crashes and mechanical problems left him winless. That all changed on Saturday night.

Mike earned his first victory of the year in fine fashion by winning the 50th Heath Memorial. The victory for Colsten was his fourth in the 50 year running of the event, with his last Heath Memorial win coming over twenty years ago in 1994.

Colsten held off last year’s Heath Memorial race winner Pat Ward, Shaun Walker would finish 3rd.

Tanner Harpell, from Kirkwood won the IMCA Modified 20 lap feature event.  Harpell is the great grandson of speedway founders Anna and Irving Heath, who the event was honoring on Saturday.

Former drivers from all over the U.S. returned to the speedway on Saturday for the special Racer’s Reunion that was held in their honor.  A pre-race chicken barbecue was held for all of the former driver’s in attendance.  Over 40 drivers from the past returned for the special gathering.

On Wednesday, July 9th, 5 Mile Point Speedway will celebrate its 64th Anniversary Season with the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour 60. To find out more about this race, go here.
