Crews are working to install dozens of communications devices on utility poles in Binghamton and Johnson City.

The small antenna systems are popping up on the west side of the city and the far east side of the village.

A Verizon Wireless spokesman said the equipment is being installed "to bring wireless signals into areas that need better coverage or more capacity."

Workers employed by Pro-Tel of Norwich have been adding microcell gear along Riverside Drive in recent days.

Most of the small antenna sites will be located in West Side neighborhoods. Four sites will be in Johnson City.

The microcell installations were approved by Binghamton and Johnson City officials early this year.
