On Monday, President Barack Obama made history by signing an act into law which gives America a new “National Mammal.”

You might not have even realized that we didn't have a National Mammal, but we do now. That mammal is the...North American bison!

Since the news broke, a lot of people have expressed their displeasure and concern that the North American bison would somehow push the bald eagle out as the symbol of our country, but the bald eagle is our National Bird and that's not going to change.

Bison were a very important part of our nation's history, serving as a symbol of the days of the Wild West. Bison also were nearly extinct, but have made an incredible comeback.

According to Defenders, 20 to 30 million bison roamed our country, but the National Bison Association reports that in 2012, there were only 162,110 bison on private farms and ranches and another roughly 20,000 bison roaming public land in both the United States and Canada. Definitely a far cry from the 20 to 30 million.
