Man Brews Beer In His Belly
I’m not even kidding when I tell you that a Texas man has been diagnosed with a disorder that causes him to brew alcohol in his stomach!
The man, whose name hasn’t been revealed, staggered into an emergency room complaining that he was dizzy and doctors found that his blood alcohol level was 0.37 percent, or almost five times the legal limit for driving. But the man said he hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol!
The guy told doctors that sometimes he got drunk out of the blue and as you’d imagine the doctors were like “yeah, okay- this guy is a closet drinker.
But there was one doctor who believed the guy and wanted to get to the bottom of what was going on. That doctor’s name is Justin McCarthy and he’s a gastroenterologist. He had the man isolated in a hospital room for 24 hours.
Throughout the day, the guy was given foods rich in carbs and doctors periodically checked his blood for alcohol. At one point, it rose 0.12 percent.
Eventually, doctors found out what was going on. The guy has an overabundance of brewer’s yeast in his gut.
The doctors are calling this strange case “auto-brewery syndrome” and say whenever the man eats or drinks a lot of starch, the yeast in his belly ferments the sugars into ethanol, and he gets drunk.
This guy is going to have some crazy stories to tell his grandkids!
