A Broome County man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following a police pursuit in Binghamton that led to his shooting by a state trooper.

Authorities say 36-year-old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey was arrested Monday in Pennsylvania. He had been hospitalized at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with injuries after he was shot in the face last Tuesday.

According to Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell, Giacalone will be extradited back to New York state.

Cornwell said Giacalone faces two counts of first-degree attempted murder in connection with the incident on Conklin Avenue.

According to the charging documents, Giacalone allegedly injured one state trooper by striking him with a car and nearly hit another trooper.

Investigators have said the trooper who was struck fired a single shot at Giacalone, striking the suspect in the face. Giacalone fled after he was shot. He was taken into custody a few minutes later.

State police said the trooper, whose name has not been made public, was treated at Wilson Medical Center for leg and facial injuries.

Cornwell will present the case against Giacalone to a Broome County grand jury. The prosecutor previously announced he had determined the trooper's actions were justified under the circumstances.
