Paving at a Binghamton intersection improvement project that began over a year ago has been finished.

Lane striping and crosswalk markings remain to be completed at Front and Clinton streets.

Utility work for the job that lowered the road surface at the railroad bridges got underway in June of last year.

Water and communications lines were relocated as part of the project. New sidewalks and traffic signals also were installed.

Completion of the work was delayed because some crosswalks were initially located improperly. Mayor Richard David said the crosswalks were redone so the city could receive a state reimbursement for a portion of the project cost.

The work added several inches to the clearance under the railroad tracks, making it less likely that tall vehicles will get stuck at the busy intersection.

Despite the street and sidewalk improvements, significant deterioration remains under the railroad bridges.
