Lisle Event to Mark 100th Anniversary of First Vote by Women

A ceremony will be held in northern Broome County exactly 100 years after the first woman voted in an election in New York state.

A historical marker commemorating the event is to be unveiled Friday outside the old Lisle Village hall.

Representatives of the Preservation Association of the Southern Tier and the Broome-Tioga Suffrage Anniversary Committee will attend the ceremony.

Florence Chauncey cast the first vote in the Lisle election on January 5, 1918. As a newspaper account of the event noted: "Two other women voted before any mere man presumed to step up for his ballot."

Three of Chauncey's grandchildren are planning to be on hand for the unveiling of the historical marker. The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at 9011 Main Street in Lisle.
