I've learned a lot since becoming a mom. Like how to function with no sleep. My son is always bouncing and climbing and exploring and talking. So much talking. Even in the middle of the night when he should be sleeping.

Trying to get John to sleep is like trying to lasso Jello, but I've found something that works. I sit on the couch, holding him with the television show 'Surviving The Wild' on. John gets really engrossed in it, and it eventually puts him to sleep. Usually I'm afraid to move for fear of waking him, so I find myself watching the show, too.

If you're not familiar with the concept of 'Surviving The Wild,' basically people are dropped off in remote areas of the world, have only a very few supplies, no food though, and they have to see who survives alone the longest. And of course, I've watched and wondered how long I would survive. How would I know what types of plants are safe to eat? Would I accidentally eat the wrong thing out of hunger desperation and die? If you've ever wondered the same things, you might be interested an event the Susquehanna Sierra Club and Triple Cities Hiking Club is hosting.

On Sunday, July 24th, Heather Housekeeper, a Certified Herbalist, long-distance hiker and author will lead an edible plants walk at Greenwood Park in Lisle.

Heather hiked about 1,000 miles through the Finger Lakes Trail system last year, and during her walk, she researched plants, Chronicling the edible and medicinal plants she came upon during her trek. Now, Heather is excited to educate others.

A $5 donation is suggested and if you'd like to take the walk, you should plan to meet in the parking lot at Greenwood Park at 1:30pm. If you want to learn more about this edible plants walk, reach out to Scott at 607-341-3746.
