The year was 1882 and the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City with a big parade.  133 years later, we celebrate the day relaxing, at least for some of us.  If you are getting your airline tickets or GPS set for some travel time, you will not be alone.

According to AAA Travel, you should get an early start as more than 35 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend 50 miles or more, breaking the 2008 travel record.  You can thank lower gasoline prices and competitive airfares for that.

While most of us enjoy a day off, millions will have to work Labor Day weekend.  The HAWK would like to salute our local police, military, firefighters, nurses, waiters and waitresses, air traffic controllers, correctional officers, and repair people.  Thank you!

And if you are one of those going on a road trip with kids, Family Fun magazine points out that 73% of families consider snacks to be the number one way to keep kids happy on a road trip.  And chances are the first round of snacks will be distributed about 30 miles from your driveway!
