Authorities say 30-year-old Shakia Crute of Burbank Avenue was arrested in connection with the death of Jerome Smith Jr.

A joint statement released by the Broome County District Attorney's Office and Johnson City Police said Crute has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Investigators say the 11-year-old boy died in his Burbank Avenue home on Johnson City's South Side.

Police were called to the residence around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The child reportedly had died before emergency personnel arrived.

According to the felony complaint, Crute is accused of "recklessly causing the death" of her son.

Although an autopsy was conducted at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, authorities have not revealed what caused the boy's death.
