A Johnson City man who sustained a traumatic brain injury in an assault near his home has died.

Authorities say 64-year-old Robert Headley of Endicott Avenue was pronounced dead at Wilson Medical Center early Saturday morning.

Another Johnson City man - 43-year-old Edward Stokes III - was arrested shortly after Headley was attacked around 8 p.m. October 5.

Village police chief Brent Dodge said Headley was "beat up" during a dispute involving the two men who were acquainted with each other. He said Headley sustained blunt force trauma, "probably from a combination of things."

Dodge said no weapon was used in the assault. Detectives interviewed one person who witnessed the incident.

Stokes originally was charged with first-degree assault, a felony. Police are consulting with the district attorney's office regarding possible additional charges as a result of Headley's death.
