Last week was the 33rd Annual Police Week in the Southern Tier. Now, this week is National Police Week.

This year's motto is "Honoring Courage, Saluting Sacrifice."

Right now, 3 police officers are on a bicycle ride from Johnson City to Washington DC in honor of Officer David D.W. Smith and Trooper Christopher Skinner.

The cyclists are Patrolman Brian Berdine of Johnson City, Officer Kevin Brown of  Binghamton and Binghamton University Police Lieutenant Martin Pettit.

They will etch their names into the Police Memorial wall, where it shall remain for eternity. D.W. and Chris paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting our community, let us never forget their sacrifice for us.

22 names in all will be added to the state police memorial.

We take for granted what we do for a living. We know, we'll be seeing our loved ones at the end of the day. The same can't be said for the families of the Policemen and Policewomen. Especially when we see what's happened recently in Mississippi and Long Island.

We may not always agree with them when we get a ticket. Let's face it, how many times have we gone too fast and not got caught....or something worse.

There job for the most part is a thankless job. Think about it. Do we call them when everything is going okay? Nope, only when Hades is breaking loose or we need their help.

So I say, thank you for all that you do.
