Basketball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I played in high school. I used to coach the sport and I've been a basketball referee for over 20 years now.

Back then, if you took a hard crash to the floor, you just shook it off. If you were seeing stars, you just took a moment till they were gone. Concussion was never discussed.

We know now that wasn't the smartest thing to do. I've noticed more concussions as the years have gone by. I don't know if it's happening more or if we have better ways of detecting it.

When my daughter, Riley suffered a concussion while playing volleyball, it knocked her off her feet for weeks, if not months. Bright lights and noise was a major problem for her.

There are protocols in place. I know high school coaches have to take a concussion course so that they know the signs. Speaking of a concussion course.

The Guthrie Clinic will have an Injury and Concussion Symposium for sport coaches and athletic trainers. It's happening tomorrow, Tuesday, August 9th from 4-7:30pm at Guthrie Corning Hospital in Corning.

Coaches along with athletic trainers are invited to attend to hear from experts on topics like basics of strength and conditioning, on-field emergencies, concussion management, and alternative treatments.

From 6-7:30pm, you can participate in CPR recertification, as long as you have a current certification. Seating is limited.

Time is running out but you can register here or call 607-937-7872. For that piece of mind that can help someone else's mind, this is a symposium worth investing in.
