Every time we visit my son's pediatrician, he remind us how important it is to read to our little boy. If you're a parent, you know reading to your kids is a good thing, but do you know exactly why?

Reading to and with your little one has a plethora of benefits ranging from building a stronger relationship with them, to helping them with basic speech skills to better communication skills. Reading also encourages logical thinking skills and instill in them at a young age that reading is fun. Kids who are exposed to reading are much more likely to pick a book over video games and such as they get older.

If you're looking into getting into reading with your little ones, the Hungry Ear might just be what you've been looking for. Hungry Ear is a monthly library program which celebrates the art of short story and is offered by the Broome County Public Library.

This month, Hungry Ear will feature Edgar Allen Poe's "The Oblong Box," which is about a strange cargo on a packet ship. Also read will be a modern story about a murder investigation, "The Oblong Room" by Edward D. Hoch.
