My first job was as a babysitter and I definitely made some descent dough, working several days a week, but I didn't make anything close to what babysitters are making these days!

While it's not ideal for our marriage, my husband and I are blessed to work opposite shifts because we don't have to pay for daycare or a sitter. There's simply no way that we'd be able to afford to pay for childcare. It would essentially wipe out one of our salaries and at that rate, why continue to work?

I kept seeing ads for Care.com and so I decided to peek and see what it would cost to pay a babysitter on the off chance our schedules collided and we needed someone in a pinch to watch our little guy. I understand that you get what you pay for and as a mom, I'm sure I'd be so paranoid that I'd even do a background check, but I was still blown away that there were some people asking for upwards of $20 an hour!

If memory serves me right, I think I made about $3 an hour. Granted, that was in the 90's, but still...

If you've got experience with kids, a bunch of stellar references, a clean background and are looking for work, you might want to think about babysitting.

How much is the average American paying their sitter? Well, in the past five years, the average pay of babysitters has jumped 28% to $13.44 an hour.

But, wait, there’s more- 25% of people say they tip their babysitter on top of the hourly rate they pay them. And 90% say the give their babysitter a yearly raise.
