The topic of fleas and flea remedies recently came up on First News with Roger Neel and Kathy Whyte, followed by some calls from listeners wanting to know the 'recipe' for a homemade flea spray that had been publicized on At Home With the Dickinsons several years ago. So, here it is:

Homemade Flea Spray

1 C. Dawn dish soap

1 C. white vinegar

1 quart water

Mix the soap, vinegar and water and pour the solution into a spray bottle.  Spray on the dog (or cat if she will let you bathe her) and massage all the way down to the skin.  Leave the solution on the pet for five minutes, then rinse with warm water.

The soap softens the flea's exoskeleton while the vinegar gets in a kills the nasty bugs.  The solution is also a good conditioner for your pet's fur and is gentle enough to use with some frequency.  You may have to do another application before all the fleas are gone, especially if they are in carpeting and bedding and can get back on your pet.
