There's a certain mystique about the buildings on State Hospital Hill on the East side of Binghamton, especially the building known as the "the castle" or mental institution that was built in the mid 1800's.  Many confirm it is haunted and soon you will find out the history of this Binghamton landmark and enjoy beer at the same time!

In 1858 construction began on what was known as the New York State Inebriate Asylum, the very first institution in the United States that treated alcoholism.  The video below states that it was this castle that single-handedly started Binghamton, New York.

The building is a standing piece historic architecture that was designed by noted architect Roger Luther, who designed a number of historic buildings in Binghamton and across the country.

The facility was later converted to a mental institution and would provide health services and employment to thousands before closing its doors in 1993.

There's a great little fundraiser to discuss the history of that castle on the hill, taking place at the gorgeous Phelps Mansion at 191 Court Street in downtown Binghamton Thursday, February 25th from 5:30-8:30pm.  Billed as a "History Happy Hour," the local beer will be flowing from Water Street Brewing Company and featuring Robert Luther's "Inside The Castle on The Hill."

Advance tickets are $15 or $10 for Phelps Mansion members 21 years and older.  Your ticket includes 2 drinks, snacks and the historic presentation.

Space is limited. To purchase your ticket please call 607-722-4873.
