Anne Geddes, that photographer who photographs babies.  She's responsible for a lot of the nifty pictures you find across the internet. You see the kids dressed like fish an bugs and flowers. She recently did an interview giving some advice about how to take better pictures of your kids.

She says to take pictures in the morning, specifically crucial to do this if they are really young.  You get better shots with babies in the morning.  They tend to be cranky later in the day. Next, crouch down to their level.  You'll always get better pics if you shoot them straight on.  You don't want every shot to be of them looking up at you, with young kids and babies, who cares... sit your butt on the ground!

Be as playful and spontaneous as you can.  Make it fun for the kid. I mean it's easy if you're just randomly popping shots of them frolicking in the backyard.  If you're trying to get them to pose for a family portrait you have to keep them entertained and be mindful of your timing.
