This Sunday marks the first ever I Run For Half Marathon in the Town of Maine. The race kicks off at 10am and many residents are concerned about how the first half marathon the town has ever held will affect traffic. This is what we know.

The Town of Union says they're working with Broome County and New York State transportation officials to handle traffic control. Traffic will be as follows:

  • From 9:55am to 10:10am on Sunday September 7th, New York Route 26 will be completely closed to traffic between Maine Memorial School and the intersection with Nanticoke Road. This is to ensure safe passage of runners exiting the Town of Maine Park and heading northbound on Nanticoke Road.
  • The majority of the I Run For Half Marathon course is on Nanticoke Road between NYS Route 26and Phillips Road. Traffic will be allowed on the road, but drivers are asked to exercise EXTREME caution. Broome County sheriff's deputies will be stationed at the northern and southern ends of the course, and at other locations to slow cars down. Volunteers will be positioned at each intersection along Nanticoke Road to slow and direct traffic. Anyone who drives recklessly will be subject to prosecution.
  • There are no restrictions on traffic before and after the event, but town officials ask that drivers use caution as volunteers set up and take down road signs, water tables, and other supplies needed for the race.
