Written and performed by the legendary Merle Haggard for his 1969 album release, it has become an anthem and one of his several signature songs.

Many artists write songs thanking their fans, but none have touched the fabric of the American laborer like Merle Haggard.

The ‘Hag’ was a rebel, innovator and represented the 40 hour a week beer drinking, hard working Americans that make up this country.

Released on Merle’s 1969 album titles ‘A Portrait of Merle Haggard’ the song hit number one on the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles Chart.

According to Wikipedia Merle produced six albums in 1969, a feat that would take many of today’s country artists years to complete.

Merle Haggard passed away last April at the age of 79 and left us a gallery of great songs.

In 2011 Merle was honored by some of the most important people in the world, including some of today’s country stars.
