More and more food products you see on the shelves of Southern Tier grocery stores are being labeled as NON GMO.  So what is GMO anyway?  The Non GMO Project defines genetically modified organisms or GMOs  as "living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE."

According to the Non GMO Project web site, "relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods."  While the safety of GMO's is unknown and some consider it debatable.  In most cases, US Consumers have no idea they are buying food with GMO's since our government does not make food manufacturers label products as containing genetically modified organisms.

It's interesting to note that more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, ban the sale of products that contain GMO's.

This Wednesday 7pm there will be a meeting for GMO labeling in the meeting room of CyberCafe West, 126 Main Street in Binghamton.  If this is something you have been following or it's something new to you, this is a good opportunity to find out more on the future of GMO labeling in the United States.
